Budget templates

A template saves one month's category budgets under a name so you can apply them to any month in one click. Mark one as default and FIYR fills it into every month that has no budget yet.

Where to find itBudgetTEMPLATE

On a computer, click TEMPLATE in the Budget header. On a phone, tap the square layers button next to the month. Both open Budget Templates, which has four parts.

Save a month as a template

  1. On the Budget page, set your budgets for a month the way you want them.
  2. Open TEMPLATE.
  3. Under CREATE NEW TEMPLATE, type a name such as "Normal month".
  4. Tick Set as default template if you want new months to fill in from it automatically.
  5. Click Preview. You see every category and the amount that will be saved, including $0 ones.
  6. Click Save Template.

The template stores the amounts from the month you are viewing. Give each template a different name: names aren't checked, and two templates with the same name are hard to tell apart.

Apply a template to a month

  1. Pick the month you want to fill on the Budget page.
  2. Open TEMPLATE.
  3. Under APPLY EXISTING TEMPLATE, choose a template. The default one is marked (default).
  4. Check the preview. It lists each category that will change, as current amount → template amount.
  5. Click Apply.

Applying sets every category in the template to its template amount for that month, including the $0 ones. Categories you've added since the template was saved keep whatever they had. Categories you've deleted since are skipped.

How the default template fills new months

When you open the Budget page, or switch to a month, FIYR checks whether that month has any budget at all. If it has none and you have a default template, the template is applied to it. That is how your budget carries forward from month to month.

Update a template

  1. Set the month's budgets the way you want the template to look.
  2. Open TEMPLATE. Under UPDATE EXISTING TEMPLATE, choose the template.
  3. Click Preview to see what changes, then Save. If the preview says No changes detected, Save stays greyed out.

Saving replaces the whole template with this month's amounts. Months you have already budgeted don't change. To push the new amounts into a month, apply the template there.

Copy last month instead

The Use Last Month's Budget button at the top of the Budget Templates window copies the previous month's amounts into the month you are viewing. Click it to see the changes, then Apply. Only categories that had a budget last month are copied; anything else keeps its current amount. If the preview says No budget data found for last month, apply a template or type the amounts instead.

Manage templates in Settings

Where to find itSettingsBudget Templates

This page lists your templates side by side. You create templates on the Budget page, not here, but you can do everything else:

  • Rename: click a template's name, type, and press Enter.
  • Delete: click the × on its card and confirm. This can't be undone.
  • Change the default: tick the box in the Default row and confirm. Only one template is the default at a time. Untick it to stop months filling themselves in.
  • Edit an amount: click any amount in the table, type, and press Enter. Esc cancels.
  • Compare with real spending: the Last 6 mo column shows a small bar chart of the last six months for each category, with a dashed line at the average. Categories with no recent spending are tucked under No recent spend.

Each card shows how many categories are budgeted, the template's total and a Default tag on the default one. Income categories and Credit Card Payment are left out of the table and the totals, because they never count toward a budget.

Common questions

Why did my budget fill itself in?

You have a default template, and the month had no budget yet, so FIYR applied it when you opened the month.

How do I stop months filling in automatically?

Go to Settings, then Budget Templates, and untick the template in the Default row.

If I edit a template, do months I already budgeted change?

No. A template is copied into a month when it is applied. To update a month, apply the template to it again.

Can I create a template in Settings?

No. Set the amounts for a month on the Budget page, then use Create New Template in the Template window. Settings is for renaming, deleting, editing and choosing the default.

Can I budget the whole year at once?

Set a default template and each month fills in as you open it. Or use the annual table to type amounts into any month directly.
