Add, edit or delete a category

In Settings > Categories, add a category with an emoji, name and group. Click ✎ to rename it or move it to another group. Deleting asks where its transactions should go, and removes that category's budget history.

Click a category to rename it, change its emoji or group, or delete it. Credit Card Payment and the Savings group are locked.

Add, rename or delete a sample category and watch the sample transactions follow. Nothing here touches your account.

Add a category

  1. In the New Category box, click the emoji field and pick an emoji (or type one; only the last emoji is kept).
  2. Type a name in Category name, e.g. Streaming.
  3. Choose a group from Select group.
  4. Click Add.

Rename, change the emoji or move to another group

  1. Hover the category and click ✎. On a phone, tap the category.
  2. In Edit Category, change the emoji, the name or the group.
  3. Click Save.

When you rename a category:

  • Every transaction in it moves to the new name, including older ones that are not loaded.
  • Its budget stays with it.
  • New bank transactions keep landing in it.
  • Transaction rules that match the old name or set it as their new category switch to the new name.
  • The new name can't be one another category already uses.

To move a category on a computer you can also drag it onto another group card. See Category groups.

Delete a category

  1. Hover the category and click ×, or click Delete in Edit Category.
  2. Select a New Category asks you to "Choose a new category for transactions currently under" the one you are deleting. Pick one.
  3. Click Confirm. There is no undo.

What happens:

  • Every transaction in the deleted category moves to the one you picked.
  • The deleted category's budget history is deleted with it. It is not added to the replacement's budget.
  • New bank transactions that would have landed there arrive as Uncategorized. Add a rule if you want them somewhere else.
  • Transaction rules that match the deleted category or set it as their new category switch to the one you picked, the same as its transactions.

Locked categories

Credit Card Payment and every Savings category show 🔒 and cannot be edited, moved or deleted. FIYR uses them in its calculations.

Common questions

If I rename a category, do my old transactions follow?

Yes. All of them, its budget, the bank mapping and any transaction rules that use it follow the new name.

What happens to my budget if I delete a category?

That category's budget history is deleted. Its transactions move to the category you pick, but the budget amounts do not.

Why can't I edit Credit Card Payment or Investments?

They are locked system categories. FIYR uses them to ignore card payments and to calculate your savings rate.

Can I reorder categories inside a group?

No. You can move a category to another group, but not change its position within a group.
