Category groups
Groups hold related categories, like Food & Drink. You can move any unlocked category between the groups you have, but groups themselves cannot be created, renamed or deleted.
Groups organize your budget, the headers in every category menu and the Settings > Categories page. The group cards there are shown with the smallest groups first.
Move a category to another group
- Open Settings > Categories.
- On a computer, drag the category by its ⠿ handle onto another group card. The card highlights while you hover it. Let go to move it.
- Or click ✎ (tap the category on a phone), change the group in Edit Category, and click Save.
Moving a category does not change its transactions or its budget, only where it is listed and which group total it adds to.
What you cannot do
- Create, rename or delete a group. The group menu only lists groups that already contain a category.
- Move categories into or out of Savings. Savings is locked. You can add a brand-new category to Savings, but it then stays there.
- Move Credit Card Payment. It is a locked system category.
If you would like a group for something specific (say, a side business), use an existing group such as Business Expenses, or use a label to tag transactions across categories.
Special groups
- Income
- Money coming in. Kept out of budget and spending totals.
- Savings
- Money moved to your own savings and investments. Left out of spending and counted toward your savings rate. Locked.
A group's own page
Type a group name into the sidebar Search (⌘K or Ctrl+K) to open a page that adds up every category in that group, with the same charts and table as a category page.
Common questions
Can I create a new category group?
No. You can move categories between the existing groups, or use a label to tag transactions across categories.
Can I rename a group?
No. Group names are fixed.
Why can't I drag a category into Savings?
Savings is locked so your savings rate stays accurate. You can add a new category directly to Savings from the New Category box.
