Add a home, car, crypto or other asset

Add a home, car, crypto or anything else of value from Add Account in the sidebar. FIYR fills in its history back to the purchase date, and a financed home or car creates its loan for you.

Where to find itAdd Account

On a computer, click Add Account at the bottom of the sidebar. On a phone, tap More, then Add account. If you have no assets yet, the Net Worth page also has an Add Your First Asset button. Adding accounts needs an active subscription.

The window offers five choices:

ChoiceUse it for
Link AccountBank, investment, retirement, credit card or loan accounts through Plaid. See Link a bank or credit card.
Real EstateA home, rental or land, with an address and optional mortgage
CryptoCoins you hold, priced from CoinGecko
Custom AssetAnything else: vehicles, collectibles, business equity, a pension, cash at home
Custom LiabilityA debt. See Add a loan or other liability.

Add a home

  1. Click Add Account, then Real Estate.
  2. Type a NAME, for example "Maple St House". Names must be unique among your assets.
  3. Optional: type the PROPERTY ADDRESS and pick it from the suggestions. FIYR uses it to fetch a home value estimate into CURRENT VALUE, and to refresh that estimate each month.
  4. Check or type the CURRENT VALUE.
  5. Set FINANCED STATUS to Owned Free & Clear or Financed.
  6. If financed, fill in CURRENT LOAN BALANCE, INTEREST RATE, LOAN TERM (MONTHS), TOTAL MONTHLY PAYMENT (INCL. ESCROW) and LOAN START DATE.
  7. Fill in PURCHASE DATE and PURCHASE PRICE.
  8. Click ADD ASSET.
Add Real Estate
A corresponding mortgage entry will be created in your liabilities to track the loan balance alongside this property.
What ADD ASSET creates
Maple St House
🏡 Real Estate
$540,000
Maple St House Loan
🏠 Mortgage, linked to the property
-$318,200
Net worth goes up by $221,800. FIYR also fills in 66 monthly values for the property, a straight line from $455,000 in May 2021 to $540,000 this month, so your net worth chart starts in the month you bought it.
Switch between Financed and Owned Free & Clear and watch what gets created.

The Financed option creates the loan for you

When a home or vehicle is Financed and the loan balance is more than $0, ADD ASSET also creates a debt named after it with "Loan" on the end, for example "Maple St House Loan". A home's loan goes in 🏠 Mortgage, a vehicle's in 🚗 Vehicle Loans. Its balance is the current loan balance you typed, saved as a negative number, along with the rate, term, payment and start date.

So adding a $540,000 home with a $318,200 loan raises your net worth by $221,800. Both show inside the 🏡 Real Estate group.

Add a car

  1. Click Add Account, then Custom Asset.
  2. Set ASSET CLASS to 🏎️ Vehicles.
  3. Fill in NAME, YEAR, MAKE and MODEL (all required) and CONDITION.
  4. Set FINANCED STATUS. If Financed, fill in the loan balance, rate, term, MONTHLY PAYMENT and LOAN START DATE. FIYR creates the car loan for you, as above.
  5. Fill in PURCHASE DATE, CURRENT VALUE and STARTING VALUE (what it was worth when you bought it), then click ADD ASSET.

FIYR does not look up car values. Update the value yourself in the monthly value review.

Add crypto

  1. Click Add Account, then Crypto.
  2. Search for the coin in CRYPTOCURRENCY and pick it. CURRENT PRICE (USD) fills in.
  3. Optional: a CUSTOM NAME (OPTIONAL), like "Cold Storage BTC". Without one, the coin's name is used.
  4. Type QUANTITY HELD. TOTAL VALUE is price × quantity.
  5. Fill in PURCHASE DATE and STARTING VALUE, then click ADD ASSET.

Crypto refreshes from CoinGecko each time you open the Net Worth page. To change how much you hold, open ⋯, Edit details, and change Quantity. A crypto account at an exchange can also be linked through Link Account instead.

Add anything else

  1. Click Add Account, then Custom Asset.
  2. Pick the ASSET CLASS: Cash, Stocks, Bonds, Real Estate, Personal Property, Private Capital, Retirement, Business Interests, Precious Metals, Jewelry, Collectibles, Crypto, Vehicles or Other.
  3. Fill in NAME, PURCHASE DATE, CURRENT VALUE and STARTING VALUE. For liquid classes you can tick Liquid Asset.
  4. Click ADD ASSET.

What FIYR does when you save

  • History back to the purchase date. FIYR adds one value per month from PURCHASE DATE to today, in a straight line from the starting value or purchase price to the current value. A car bought in 2021 has a history from 2021. See How net worth history is recorded.
  • Blank amounts become $0. If you leave the purchase price or starting value empty, the history climbs from $0. Leave the purchase date empty and it is today, with a single value.
  • A label with the same name. FIYR creates a transaction label named like the asset. Tag transactions with it (for example a payment toward the car) and they show as credits and debits in its value history and feed its IRR. See Labels.

Common questions

How do I add my house with a mortgage?

Add Account, then Real Estate. Enter the address, value, purchase date and price, set Financed Status to Financed and fill in the loan details. FIYR creates the mortgage as a separate debt named after the house.

Does my home value update automatically?

If you entered an address, FIYR fetches an estimate when it records a new month, and shows it in the monthly value review. Without an address, update it yourself.

Why is my new asset's history a straight line?

FIYR fills the months between the purchase date and today in a straight line from the starting value to the current value. Edit any month in its Value History table to make it more accurate.

Can I add a 401(k) or brokerage account without linking it?

Yes. Use Custom Asset and pick Retirement or Stocks. You will update its value yourself each month.
