How your net worth is calculated

Your net worth is the value of everything you own minus everything you owe. FIYR adds up the current value of every asset, then subtracts every debt, including archived items. Sold and paid-off items count as $0.

Where to find itNet Worth

Net worth = total assets − total debts

  • Total assets is the current value of every asset: linked bank, investment and retirement accounts plus homes, cars, crypto and anything else you added.
  • Total debts is the current balance of every liability: credit cards, mortgages, car loans, student loans and any debt you added.
  • FIYR stores debts as negative numbers, which is why they show with a minus sign. Adding them to your assets is the same as subtracting what you owe.

Example: a $400,000 home, $20,000 in savings, a $50,000 brokerage account and a $15,000 car make $485,000 in assets. A $250,000 mortgage, an $8,000 car loan and a $2,000 credit card balance make $260,000 in debts. Net worth is $485,000 − $260,000 = $225,000.

$724,050 in assets plus -$329,950 in debts = $394,100. Archived items still add $41,200 to that total, even while their rows are hidden.

What counts and what does not

ItemCounts toward net worth?
Linked bank, investment and retirement accountsYes, at the balance your bank reports
Credit cardsYes, as a debt. The balance owed lowers net worth.
Homes, cars, crypto and custom assetsYes, at the value you entered or the latest estimate
A home and its mortgageBoth: the home at full value and the mortgage as a debt. The 🏡 Real Estate group total shows the difference.
Archived itemsYes. Archiving only hides the row. The value still counts.
Sold assets and paid-off loansNo. Their value is $0 from the sale or payoff date.
Items hidden by Hide Zero BalanceThey are $0, so they add nothing either way
Deleted itemsNo, and their past history is gone too

Investment accounts count at their account balance. The individual holdings inside them do not change the value.

Which bank balance FIYR uses

For accounts you link through our bank connection partner, Plaid, FIYR uses:

  • Checking accounts: the available balance, when your bank provides one. It includes pending deposits and charges sooner. If there is no available balance, FIYR uses the current balance.
  • Every other account (savings, credit cards, loans, brokerage, retirement): the current balance.

When you first link an account its balance is rounded up to the whole dollar. After that, the balance refreshes each time your bank sends Plaid new transactions, and that refresh also updates this month's point in your history. See How and when transactions sync.

Where linked accounts land

FIYR files each linked account in a class from the account type your bank reports:

Bank account typeClass
Checking, savings, money market, CD, HSA, cash management, PayPal, prepaid💵 Cash (asset)
Brokerage, mutual fund, stock plan📈 Stocks (asset)
IRA, Roth, 401(k), 403(b), 457(b), pension and other retirement accounts💼 Retirement (asset)
Crypto exchange or wallet🪙 Crypto (asset)
Credit card💳 Credit Card Debt (debt)
Mortgage or home equity🏠 Mortgage (debt)
Auto loan🚗 Vehicle Loans (debt)
Student loan📚 Educational Loans (debt)
Any other loan💰 Personal Loans (debt)
Anything else🧩 Other (asset)

You can change the class later in the item's editor (⋯, then Edit details). FIYR has a fixed list of classes; you cannot create your own yet.

Liquid net worth

Liquid Net Worth, on the Net Worth tab, adds up only the items marked liquid: money you could turn into cash within a few days without a big loss.

  • New items in 💵 Cash, 📈 Stocks, 🏦 Bonds, 🪙 Crypto and 💎 Precious Metals start as liquid. Everything else starts as not liquid.
  • Change it with the Liquid Asset checkbox in an asset's editor. Liquid rows show a Liquid pill.
  • Debts cannot be marked liquid, so Liquid Net Worth is the total of your liquid assets. It does not subtract credit card balances.

Example: $20,000 in savings and a $50,000 brokerage account are liquid; the home and car are not. Liquid Net Worth is $70,000.

Debt-to-asset

Debt-to-Asset = total debts ÷ total assets × 100

  • It reads 0% when you have no assets. With $260,000 in debts and $485,000 in assets it is 53.6%.

Common questions

Why didn't my net worth go down when I archived an account?

Archive only hides the row; the value still counts. To take it out, use Mark as sold… for an asset, set its value to $0, or delete it (which also erases its history).

Do Ask Fiyr and the dashboard show the same net worth as this page?

Yes. Ask Fiyr, the dashboard and the home-screen widgets all use this same calculation: every asset minus every debt, archived items included. Turning an account off in Safe to Spend on the Goals page, or out of your FIRE plan, does not change your net worth.

Does FIYR use my available or current balance?

For checking accounts, the available balance when your bank provides one. For every other account, the current balance.

Is my home counted at full value if I have a mortgage?

Yes. The home counts at its full value and the mortgage counts as a debt, so the difference is what adds to your net worth.

Can I create my own asset classes?

Not yet. Pick the closest class from the list, or use 🧩 Other.

Can I use a currency other than US dollars?

No. FIYR shows every value in US dollars.
