How net worth history is recorded

FIYR keeps one value per month for every asset and debt, and rebuilds your net worth for each month from those values. History comes from four places: the fill-in when you add an item, bank updates, the monthly carry-forward, and your own edits.

Where to find itNet Worth

FIYR doesn't take a single snapshot of your net worth. Each item has its own value history, one value per month, and the chart adds them up month by month. That is why changing one item's past can change your past net worth.

Where the monthly values come from

1. When you add an item
FIYR fills one value per month from the purchase date (for a loan you add yourself, its START DATE) to today, in a straight line from the starting value to the current value. Add a car bought for $30,000 two years ago that is worth $22,000 today, and its history steps down evenly over 25 months.
2. When your bank updates
For linked accounts, each time your bank sends Plaid new transactions, FIYR saves the latest balance as this month's value. A newly linked account starts with just today's balance.
3. When you open the Net Worth page
The first time you open the page in a new month, FIYR adds this month's value to every item that doesn't have one yet, using its latest value. You may see "Updating Your Financial Data" with a count of accounts updated. Homes with an address get a fresh value estimate and crypto gets the latest price.
4. When you edit
The monthly value review, clicking an amount on a row, editing a month in the Value History table, marking something sold and rebuilding a linked account's history all write values. See Edit, sell, archive or delete.

On days 1 to 5 of each month, step 3 opens the monthly value review first, so you can type real numbers for your house, car and other manual items before the month is recorded.

How the chart builds each month

  • For every month on the chart and every item, FIYR uses the item's value in that month, or its most recent earlier value if that month is missing.
  • The current month always uses each item's current value, so the last point matches the header.
  • Net worth for the month is all assets plus all debts (debts are negative). Archived items are included.

See and fix an item's history

  1. On the Net Worth page, open the item's group.
  2. Click Value History under the item to expand its table: Date, Value, Credits, Debits, Change $ and % Change.
  3. Click a value to edit that month, then press Enter or click away.

Editing a past month changes only that month. Editing this month also changes the item's current value. Credits and Debits are that month's transactions tagged with a label named exactly like the item.

Back-fill a linked account

A linked account starts with only today's balance. To estimate its past, open ⋯ on its row and choose Rebuild value history. FIYR walks backward month by month from today's balance using the account's imported transactions, and shows you the result to check. Confirm replaces the account's history with those values (you can still edit any month afterwards); Cancel changes nothing.

  • It only works for accounts linked through Plaid that have transactions in FIYR. Otherwise you'll see "No transactions found for this account."
  • It is offered once per account and not for crypto. The result is an estimate based on the transactions FIYR has.

Common questions

Why is my history a straight line?

When you add something with a past purchase date, FIYR fills the months in between with a straight line from the starting value to today's value. Edit any month in the Value History table to make it more accurate.

Why did my net worth chart change for months in the past?

Usually because an item was deleted, its purchase date was moved, or a past month was edited. Archiving and marking as sold do not change the past.

Does FIYR record my net worth if I don't open the app?

Linked accounts still update when your bank sends new transactions. Manual items only get a new month when you open the Net Worth page; skipped months show the last known value.

Can I rebuild history for a manual asset?

No. Rebuild value history uses a linked account's transactions. For manual items, edit months in the Value History table.
