The setup wizard, step by step

After you start your trial, FIYR asks you to link an account, then walks you through seven short steps: Profile, Budget, Assets, Liabilities, Goals, Income and Expenses. Nothing is required, and everything can be changed later.

The setup runs once, straight after checkout. The sidebar and tab bar are hidden until you finish.

The first screen says Welcome to FIYR. Click Link an account, choose your bank in the Plaid window and sign in. FIYR then shows Setting up your account while it imports transactions and sorts them into categories.

  • You move on by yourself when the import finishes, or after about 90 seconds at most. Older history keeps arriving in the background either way.
  • Click Continue without waiting to move on straight away.
  • Click I'll do this later to skip linking. You can link from Add Account any time. See Link a bank or credit card.

The seven steps

A progress bar along the top shows where you are. The footer has ← Back, "Step N of 7", and Continue →. Skip for now appears on Budget, Assets, Liabilities and Goals.

Income and Expenses

These steps list patterns FIYR is confident about first. Less certain ones sit under Lower Confidence, collapsed; click it to look through them. If you skipped linking, or the import is still running, you will see "No recurring ... patterns detected yet. You can add them manually later." That is fine.

Common questions

I skipped linking. How do I add my bank now?

Click Add Account at the bottom of the sidebar, then Link Account. On a phone, tap More, then Add account. You can also use + LINK ACCOUNT in Settings > Linked Accounts.

Can I run the setup again?

No, it runs once. Everything it asks for has a permanent home: your profile in Settings, and budgets, goals and recurring items on their own pages.

Do I have to fill in every step?

No. Nothing is required. Continue → works on every step, and the profile can be finished later in Settings > Profile.

Why does FIYR want my date of birth?

Your age and retirement age drive the FIRE projections. See The FIRE page, explained.
