The Linked Accounts page

Settings > Linked Accounts lists every bank connection and its accounts, with balances, connection warnings, totals, your credit utilization, fees you have been charged, and who each account belongs to.

Where to find itSettingsLinked Accounts

On a phone: More > Settings, then Linked Accounts. If a connection needs attention, the Linked Accounts item in the Settings menu shows a small count badge.

Citi needs reconnecting
Your bank ended the connection, so new transactions aren't coming in. Reconnecting takes a moment and keeps your history.

Try Reconnect on the Citi notice, Unlink on a bank, and turn on Married to assign accounts. The totals recalculate as you go.

Connection notices

If any connection needs attention, a notice for it sits at the top of the page, with the affected accounts (name and last four digits) and a Reconnect button. See Fix a connection that needs reconnecting.

The summary cards

Accounts
How many linked accounts you have, across all banks.
Total Balance
The balance of every linked account added together, as each bank reports it. A credit card or loan balance is what you owe, and it is added, not subtracted. So this is not your net worth; for that, see How your net worth is calculated.
Total Available
The available balance of every account that reports one, added together. Banks often leave this blank for cards and investment accounts, which then count as $0.
Credit Utilization
Shown only if you have a linked credit card with a reported limit. See below.

How credit utilization is worked out

Credit Utilization = total credit card balances ÷ total credit card limits × 100

  • Only accounts your bank labels as credit cards count. Lines of credit and loans are left out.
  • A card whose bank does not report a limit is left out of both sides, and the card shows a note such as "1 card without a reported limit excluded".
  • Under 30% shows green, 30% to under 50% amber, 50% and over red.

Example: one card owes $1,500 on a $10,000 limit and another owes $500 on a $5,000 limit. That is $2,000 of $15,000, so utilization is 13.3%, shown in green with "$2,000.00 of $15,000.00" underneath.

Fees & interest

If FIYR finds fees in the last 12 months of your transactions, a Fees & interest card shows totals for Late fees, Overdraft / NSF, Interest, Annual fees and Foreign transaction. Late fees and overdrafts are shown in red because they are avoidable. Click a tile to see up to 12 of those charges with date, name, account and amount.

Fees are spotted by the name the bank gives the charge (for example "LATE FEE" or "INTEREST CHARGE"), so a fee with an unusual name may not be counted.

Banks and accounts

Each bank connection is a card with the bank name, how many accounts it covers, and an Unlink button. Each account row shows:

ColumnWhat it shows
NameThe account name from your bank, with its official product name underneath.
···1234The last four digits of the account number.
balanceThe current balance. For a card or loan, the amount owed. Greyed out when it is zero or less.
availableThe available balance, in green. A dash (-) means your bank did not report one.
annual feeThe most recent annual or membership fee charged on that card, if FIYR found one.
TypeThe account type your bank reports, such as checking, savings, credit card, mortgage, 401k or roth.

Who each account belongs to

If your marital status is Married in Settings > Profile, every account row gets three pills: your name, your spouse's name, and Both. A coloured dot at the start of the row, and the key above the list, show the current choice.

  1. Set Marital Status to Married and add your spouse's name in Settings > Profile, then click Update Profile.
  2. Open Settings > Linked Accounts.
  3. On each account, click the pill for who it belongs to. A bar at the top says "Updating account holder and transactions...", then "Account holder updated successfully!".

Changing the holder also re-tags that account's existing transactions, except any where you changed the holder by hand. New transactions from the account arrive with the new holder, and transaction rules can use the account holder as a condition.

Renaming or hiding an account

There is no rename or hide on this page. The account name comes from your bank. What you can do, on the Net Worth page:

  • Rename the account's Net Worth entry: open its ⋯ menu and choose Edit details.
  • Hide it from the Net Worth list while keeping its history: ⋯ > Archive. An archived entry still counts toward your net worth totals.
  • Take it out of your net worth completely: ⋯ > Delete. This removes the entry and its value history from Net Worth. The account's transactions stay.
  • Turn on Hide Zero Balance to hide accounts with nothing in them.

These change the Net Worth entry only. The name in Linked Accounts and on transactions stays as your bank sends it. See Edit, sell, archive or delete an asset or loan.

Common questions

Why is my Total Balance higher than my net worth?

Total Balance adds every balance as the bank reports it, including what you owe on cards and loans. Net worth subtracts debts. Use the Net Worth page for the real figure.

Why does a card show a dash under available?

Your bank did not report an available balance for it. That is common for cards and investment accounts.

Why is a card missing from Credit Utilization?

Its bank does not report a credit limit, so FIYR leaves it out rather than guess. The card counts toward the note under the figure.

Can I remove one account from a bank and keep the others?

Not here. Unlink removes the whole connection. To stop one account counting toward your net worth, delete its entry on the Net Worth page (⋯ > Delete). Archiving only hides it from the list.

Where do I set who an account belongs to?

The holder pills only appear once your marital status is Married in Settings > Profile.
