Split a transaction
Use ⋮ > Split to break one charge into parts with their own names, amounts and categories. Whatever you do not split off stays on the original.
Where to find itTransactions⋮Split
Splitting is for one charge that covers several things, like a $150 Costco run that was $110 of groceries and a $40 gift.
- Hover the transaction, click ⋮ and choose Split. On a phone, tap the row and tap SPLIT.
- The Split Transaction window shows the original name, the amount still remaining (it updates as you type) and the category.
- Fill in the first split: Transaction name (pre-filled with the original name), Enter amount and Select Category.
- Click + Add Another Split for more parts. X removes one.
- Click Confirm.
What happens
- The original transaction is reduced to whatever is left. Its History says "Split into N transactions".
- Each split becomes a new transaction with the same date, account and labels as the original. Its History says "Split from <name> ($X)".
Example: split $40 off a $150 Costco charge into Gifts. You end up with Costco $110.00 in Groceries and Costco $40.00 in Gifts.
Limits
- The splits must add up to less than the original. At least $0.01 has to stay on the original, so to divide $150 into $110 and $40, split off only the $40.
- Confirm stays grey until the first split has a name, an amount above 0 and a category.
- Incoming transactions (refunds, deposits) cannot be split.
- There is no "unsplit". To undo, delete the split-off transactions and change the original amount back.
Common questions
Why is Confirm greyed out?
The first split needs a name, a category and an amount above 0, and the splits together must be less than the original amount.
Can I split a deposit?
No. Only money-out transactions can be split.
How do I undo a split?
Delete the transactions you split off, then edit the original back to its full amount.
