Pending transactions

A pending transaction is one your bank has authorized but not settled yet. FIYR shows its name in faint italics. Pending transactions count toward your totals like posted ones.

When the bank posts it:

  • Your edits carry over. If you renamed it, changed the category, added labels or picked a goal, the posted transaction keeps them.
  • The amount updates to the settled amount. If it settled for more than it was authorized for (a restaurant tip, for example), a green $X tip chip appears under the amount. Hover it to see both amounts.
  • History records the move from pending to posted.

Rules run when a transaction first arrives, so a pending transaction that a rule changed keeps that change when it posts.

Refunds and returns

A refund arrives as incoming money, shown in green with a plus sign, for example +$32.99. On the Transactions page it adds to Income; it is not subtracted from Spending. See How the Transactions page totals work.

Options if you want the purchase and refund to cancel out:

  • Label both the purchase and the refund ignore. Neither counts.
  • Give both the same label (for example "returns"). The label's page totals tagged transactions with refunds subtracted. See Labels.

Late categories

Your bank sometimes adds a category a day or two after a transaction arrives. FIYR only fills it in if the transaction is still Uncategorized. It never overwrites a category you or a rule set.

Questions about when new transactions appear are answered in How and when transactions sync.

Common questions

Will my edits be lost when a pending transaction posts?

No. Your name, category, labels and goal carry over to the posted transaction.

A pending transaction disappeared. Why?

Your bank removed it, which happens with holds and cancelled orders. FIYR mirrors the bank. If the charge posts later, it shows up as a new transaction.

What is the tip chip?

The transaction posted for more than was authorized. The difference is shown as the tip; hover the chip for both amounts.

Why does a refund increase my income?

Every incoming amount counts as income on the Transactions page. Label the refund and the purchase ignore if you want them to cancel out.
